To the people who destroyed our field

To the people who destroyed our field:

By destroying our field, you did more than destroy our property and trespass. The blackberry bushes are gone. The small growing trees are gone and so is our future forest. The rabbits not killed by your tractor are now without a home. The deer we watched from our dining table will not come around any more. The armadillos will no longer wander through the yard with their young following behind. The bees have lost flowers to gather pollen from. The birds that nested and fed have lost more habitat to encroaching development.

To the people that thought they were “helping” out and ordered tractors and mowers onto our property, you ignored the fact that you were trespassing and destroyed our property. You made a decision about something you had no right to interfere with. You may think it is important to keep up appearances, battling the searing sun, like “mad dogs and Englishmen”, but not everyone thinks that a completely manicured lawn is in good taste. Rather, there are those of us who embrace a natural state, keeping only a small part set aside and trimmed for our use. This allows the other creatures we share the land with to keep a home.

It is inexplicable that you decided to destroy our field with no consideration for our plans. You neither said anything nor asked permission or our thoughts. It is unbelievable that you would hire someone to bully their way through our yard with machines large enough to kill small animals. It is inconceivable to think that you thought you were helping in some way. Further, if you think that we will now consider mowing more than the half acre we maintain of the two acres of our overall property, you are sadly mistaken. We will let our land revert to its natural state. We will let the animals return and build homes. Do not encroach on our property again.
