The Art of Display

These photos come from Jane Hill at Shepherd’s Cottage showcased at the Bible of British Taste. The display of seeming clutter in such a personal and tasteful manner really appeals to my Magpie instincts. Here at the Magpie's Shambles, my loving term for my personally curated & collected home, I too display my things in an overlapped method, especially given that I must accommodate our collection of books

One man's clutter is another man's collection--and what a lovely collection this is.
A library corner of comfort and hominess, cozy and inviting.
A lived in space. The chair is as layered as the shelves.
The variety of things adds to the interest. The music lyre at center. An odd black scoop-like item at the bottom. A mirror reflecting light and a scene unseen. A miniature rocking chair. A ceramic pot. A painted gourd? Pictures: framed, unframed, partially framed. Prints, lithographs, sketches.
Painted platters atop a picnic hamper. Art everywhere, mounted in different ways or loose. A letter saved for the stamps? A silhouette image or two. A sketch atop old newsprint mounted simply on black paper.
Fancy frames or no frames. Displaying art as it comes. Perhaps one day the right frame will come along. Perhaps never. Displays like this can be rotated out more easily when unframed.
Hanging pictures over the shelves and books. A curtain covering even more.
Sculpture mixed with art.
