When you comply with unlawful orders, you validate them. You teach officers that they can demand compliance without cause. You reinforce behavior that leads to rights violations. Ask, "Under what legal authority are you demanding...?" 

Continue. "Am I free to go? Or am I being detained, which requires reasonable suspicion. If I am not being detained that means this encounter is voluntary and I am free to go."
